The Sunshine Coast recently had a chance to listen to one of today’s most famous romantic piano player, and will soon hear the most promising stars of tomorrow. The Pender Harbour Music Society presented its fourth concert this season. Pavel Egorov performed a piano music to an enthusiast audience. He played Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann and Glinka. Egorov was recently made the Peoples’ Artist of the Russian Federation, the highest rank an artist can archieve in Russia. In was an honor to receive him in Pender Harbour, the public was charmed and called him back twice with standing ovations. The Coast Recital Society will close its 2007/08 season with Tyler Duncan and Erika Switzer. The duo are rising young concert stars with a bright future and will play at the Raven’s Cry Theater. Performing all over the world, from New York (their residence) to France thought South Africa, and are acclaimed by critics and audiences. Duncan sings in the lieder, opera and oratorio genres from baroque to modern. In addition to their recital, they will also perform for the local elementary schools, bringing a new light on classical music. As always, the Sunshine Coast is promoting culture and arts in all forms. The communities and visitors alike strive for these events.

Dance is in the Air on the Sunshine Coast

Caravan World Rhythms is coming back to Gibsons next weekend. Be prepared for a captivating performance of contemporary dance and dance film. The group came to Sechelt last November to present us with Dance-PLUS and a spectacular flamenco show. A new edition of the Dance series continue this year with this new show, this time playing at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. The evening will feature some of British Columbia’s best emerging and established dancers and creators. Certainly something not to be missed! And for the pleasure of the locals, Alison Denham, award winning dancer and member of our community, will provide a mixed dance program featuring solos, duets and dance-inspired films. Traditional and new dance audiences will be amazed. Innovative, sensual and intense creations will be on stage, reflecting many of today’s personal and social challenges and opportunities. In addition free workshops will be held during the weekend by the Tomorrow Collective and Denham. After Jim Byrnes’ concert last weekend, here is another day and another cultural event on the Sunshine Coast.

Year-round activities on the Sunshine Coast

On the Sunshine Coast, there are plenty of activities to do, either with your group of friends or your family. Between boating to inlets and islands, hiking in the Tetrahedron, kayaking and canoeing on sea or lakes, scuba diving, fishing, golfing, mountain biking, paragliding and anything else you might want, there are plenty of choices! But sometimes, it’s nice to stay dry. The new Sechelt & Area Aquatic Centre offers pools, diving board, in-pool climbing wall, slides, sauna, fitness centre, whirlpool… It’s the perfect idea for a Saturday with all the family, with something to do for everyone. Finalized in November 2007, the Aquatic Centre brings together the community around a new facility. A two-court indoor tennis area is in construction in Sechelt, by the Sunshine Coast Arena, allowing aficionados to play by any weather and stay in shape during the winter season. In Gibsons, the Community Centre will open this winter, with an NHL-size ice arena to practice Canada’s most famous sport, but also a new fitness centre, indoor racquet courts and various rooms available to the community for family reunions, birthdays or meetings. All these new facilities benefit from an energy efficient design and construction and are symbols of the Sunshine Coast way of life: an active lifestyle in harmony with the natural environment in a strong community. The sun shines also during the Winter

You may be thinking “another rainy day on the Sunshine Coast”, but rain brings a couple of good things: green grass and mud! Our Sunshine Coast might be renowned for its Sun during the summertime, but winter has its charms. I may be romantic, but a walking on the beach under the rain, with the Vancouver Island in the clouds, the wind and perfection of nature… It’s just the real Coast life. But of course, the real true good thing about rain is mud. Because mountain biking is that much better when there is mud. The weekend riders will all agree. First going up, lashing rain, against the wind. That much harder, that much better. Then down, Red Baron first, for a bit of technical downhill, then Janet’s Jungle for some jumps and drops (careful, slippery), and then Black Tower to finish, that’s where you add the final touches. Back down at the parking lot, just smile and let them admire. Head to toe covered in mud? That’s half the fun. Mountain biking is just one of the countless outdoor activities that the Sunshine Coast has to offer. The Coast way of life is focused on Nature and enjoying it. Whatever the weather.

Gibsons BC Reviews Waterfront Condo Development

The Town of Gibsons' Council met on August 7, 2007 to consider zoning amendments and a development permit application for Target Development's (Grant Gillies) condominium project on Gower Point Road (Shoal Bay).

Gibsons waterfront project model

The Target Development is one of three projects being developed for the Gibsons waterfront. Other waterfront projects include harbour expansion proposed by the Gibsons Landing Harbour Authority, and the Gibsons Tugboat Landing Boutique Hotel and Conference Centre proposal which will soon come forward from Klaus Fuerniss Enterprises. The full report to the Planning Committee from the Director of Planning, Chris Marshall, is available online in PDF format. See details on pages 31 - 154. Pages 47 and 48 contain staff's opinion of the project which state: "the proposed development meets the majority of the OCP's objectives and policies for the Gibsons Landing area... There are many questions to be answered and legal agreements to be drafted prior to this project going forward to First Reading but, to date, Staff are impressed with what the applicant is proposing." The proposal will be reviewed by Planning Committee on September 11. The applications will then come back to Council for First Reading of the required zoning by-law amendment when the conditions specified in the Planner's report have been met. Council will then set the date for the Public Hearing. Gibson's Mayor Janyk has stated at the Planning Committee meetings that Gibsons community input will be critical to any decisions made regarding this project. As noted by Mayor Janyk, "it is not the Planning Committee, nor indeed, Council that will decide the fate of this project. Council will be entertaining input from the community at the Public Hearing." At that time, public input will be critical to any decisions may by Mayor and Council. The project model presented at the open house is on display in the Gibsons Landing Harbour Authority office on the Gibsons Landing wharf. Beachcombers TV Series Celebrates 35th Anniversary in Gibsons BC

Hundreds of people joined together in Gibsons, BC, on the Sunshine Coast on September 8 and 9, 2007 to mark the 35th anniversary of one of Canada's most famous and popular TV shows. "The Beachcombers" aired from 1972 to 1990 across Canada and, eventually, in more than 60 countries around the world. The series is still in reruns. Jackson Davies, who played Constable Constable and produced later spin-offs, says involving locals was a key to "The Beachcombers" success. Davies notes that residents of the small community of Gibsons claimed ownership of the series because producers were so committed to hiring locals as actors, extras and set workers. "The Beachcombers" is also credited with giving many in Vancouver's robust film and TV industry their start. Here is some video taken on the 35th anniversary of TV series' Persephone boat...

Gibsons Chamber of Commerce SuperHost Trainers Required

The Gibsons & District Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for persons interested in free training to become Tourism BC SuperHost ® trainer/coordinators. This is commission-based position (not a salaried position). Education experience is preferred. The Chamber will pay training costs in exchange for a commitment to provide local workshops on our behalf. Travel, accommodation and meal costs will be reimbursed. The training session takes place in Vancouver from Sept. 28-30. Contact Cheryl at the Gibsons Chamber office at 886-2325 for more information. National Hiking Trail Expanding to Sunshine Coast

The National Hiking Trail (NHT) is Canada’s oldest national trail system and will stretch 10,000 from St. John’s, N.L. to Victoria when completed. Hike B.C. has been working with the province to get approval to incorporate sections of trail in southern B.C into the NHT. “Our goal is to create a national hiking trail that is strictly non-motorized, promotes general fitness, and preserve nature, natural scenic heritage and historic values,” said Pat Harrison of Hike B.C., which is responsible for the westernmost portion of the trail. “We are also trying to promote tourism and outdoor education.” Currently the trail system, which, unlike the Trans Canada Trail, is not open to ATVs or snowmobiles, has a total of 3,500 km completed, with sections in every province. However, the system is just now expanding to southern B.C. with the Sunshine Coast Trail near Powell River being the first approved and signed section in the region.
